SAINT BENEDICT, ABERTILLERY AND SIX BELLS:

It was so good to be with you all in October and to see the progress of the Mission, and indeed its necessity. The Chapter of Advice has agreed that the Mission be now elevated to the status of a Parish to cover the entire area of Abertillery, Six Bells, Cwmtillery, Blaina, Aberbeeg and Llanhilleth. Dame Catrina Morgan, OSP, remains, of course, the Guardian & Administrator of the Parish and Father Flynn the Parish Priest.
At time of writing the Solemn Mass on Holy Innocents’ Day, Monday December 28th has still to take place at Catrina’s, followed by a Christmass Party. The next listed Mass is at a new venue on Monday, January 11th, the Feast of Saint Hyginus, at 6pm. Mr and Mrs Tommy Donovan of Aberbeeg who for many years attended the little Saint David’s Catholic Church at Llanhilleth until its closure, had remained attached to the Old Mass and have now been attending Abertillery/Six Bells Masses for over a year. Tommy and Kath are very kindly hosting their first Mass on January 11th and we thank them heartily. They have already found the warmest of welcomes amongst our Abertillery stalwarts. This of course becomes the Parish’s third Mass Station, and extends our activities further south, below Six Bells.
There will also be Solemn Mass at Abertillery (Catrina’s) on Sunday, January 24th, Third after Epiphany at Noon, followed by Bring-and-Share Lunch and Parish Meeting.  Thanks to you all, dear friends!

OUR LADY OF MANCHESTER AT MANCHESTER:

The December Solemn Mass at Urmston on 5th December at Penny’s was well attended with over twenty people. Bishop Anthony is always happy to come up and very much enjoys being with you. Your great love and kindness means more than words can say.
As ever, Moira brought a group over from Rochdale. The next Manchester Mass is on Thursday, January 28th at 1pm and will be followed by lunch and meeting. Our small, faithful student band from Manchester University have promised to come. We will be discussing another student leafleting campaign.

SAINT BLANE AT ARBROATH:

There will be Mass at 6pm at Arbroath on Wednesday, January 13th, Feast of the Baptism of our Lord. We thank Canon Anson for all he does and for keeping the Faith of our Fathers alive at Arbroath where we have our own modern building off the main street. Father’s great work is of course at Dundee, but the work and witness in presbyterian Arbroath is deeply valued, not just by the small Catholic community in this lovely seaside town, but by the entire ArchConfraternity.  Deo Gratias!

GAUDETE AT HAMPSTEAD – THIRD OF ADVENT:

It was a pleasure to have Father Eric Bilton of Saint Matthias, Barnsley Central with us for that weekend and we thank him for his great generosity to the ArchConfraternity. Following the Solemn Mass at 12.30pm there was the inevitable lunch when we were able to discuss plans for the new year – not least a necessary Visitation to Angus to see dear Canon Anson and to meet the people in our four Missions there. Father Eric has agreed to accompany Dame Della Edling and Bishop Anthony. An early Spring date to be arranged. We also intend to visit Father Leslie Saywell at Holy Guardian Angels’ at Borrowstounness in West Lothian.

DO PLEASE KEEP THOSE SECOND CLASS STAMPS COMING!!

They are a source of real income to the ArchConfraternity, helping tremendously with the postal bill for the despatch of the monthly Notes. As we’ve already stressed: many of our older Faithful don’t have access to a computer – and thus to our Web Site – and really do rely on the “old fashioned word” as a vital means of communication. Particular thanks to all who sent stamps during November.  Please do most kindly send a donation for Christmass. Cheques should be made payable to “The ArchConfraternity of Our Lady of Victories” and sent to Bishop Anthony at the address at the top of the Kalendar  or  to Mr. Simon Gibbs, our ArchConfraternity Treasurer, at:
Gibbs & Co., Blackwell House, Guildhall Yard, London,EC2V.5AE.
God will bless you.    Holy Mass is offered monthly for all our benefactors.

***THE ARCHCONFRATERNITY BANK ACCOUNT:

As you will see above, the name has finally been normalised and all cheques should be made payable to The ArchConfraternity of Our Lady of Victories.
We thank so many of you for your continuing generosity. Please help us to go from strength to strength!

FEAST OF THE EXPECTATIONS OF OUR LADY:

This was December 18th when there was Mass at Hampstead at 3pm and we finally managed to hold the annual Advent/Christmass Readings which had to be postponed from the previous Sunday on account of illness. We thank sincerely Dame Vicky Carpenter and Mr. Robin Saikia for their thoughtfully planned devotional readings. Bishop Anthony also read two of the beautiful Christmass poems of Christina Rossetti. The Mass was offered for the Repose of the soul of our dear Eileen Conrad-Frankowska whose first Anniversary of death was on December 20th. We all miss Eileen so very much and still feel her presence in the Oratory.

FEAST OF THE INFANT OF PRAGUE:

This occurs on Thursday, January 7th which also happens to be Christmass Day in the Russian Orthodox Church.  All our Czech Missions will obviously be keeping the Feast which represents the Boyhood of our Saviour, as well as the defeat of protestantism in Bohemia in 1620 at the Battle of the White Mountain (Bila Hora where our Prague Mission is based). The Feast will be kept in London too, with Solemn Mass at 7pm. It need not be kept in any other of our British Missions, unless clergy would care to do so in union with our Faithful in Bohemia and Moravia. The propers of the Mass are suitably those of the First Sunday after Epiphany, as in the Missal.

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY:

This falls on Wednesday, January 6th and is an Holy Day of Obligation. Do please consult Clergy and Guardians for times of Masses. There will be London Masses in Hampstead at 7pm and in Battersea at Queenstown Road at Noon. The ceremony of the Blessing of Chalk should follow Mass, when we transcribe the initials of the Magi on our doors and lintels as a sign of Christian Welcome.

SAINT SEBASTIAN, SHEPHERDS BUSH:

We feel we may have neglected somewhat in the Notes this, one of our Founding Missions. Saint Sebastian’s remains very active with an average congregation of fifteen. There were in fact seventeen people at the December Mass on Monday, December 14th and we thank Eileen O’Connor for all she does. The Patronal Feast of the Mission will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 20th, Feast of Ss Fabian & Sebastian, with Pontifical Solemn Mass at 7pm. We hope for a grand turn out of our London people! Usual venue at Eileen’s at Goldhawk Road. Bring-and-Share Buffet Supper will follow.

SAINT DAVID LEWIS, MONMOUTH AND USK:

Father Flynn reported twelve people at the advertised Mass on December 15th; there were absences due to illness. Renee has again been to stay with Angela Ullathorne at Midhurst and it is good that these inter-Parish friendships are being fostered. Next Usk Mass on Tuesday, January 5th at 7pm and renewed thanks to Renee for everything she does. That Mass will be an anticipation of the Epiphany and will be followed by a New Year drinks party. All our Monmouthshire/South Wales stalwarts most welcome, of course!

FEAST OF SAINT CHARLES STUART, KING AND MARTYR:

This falls on Saturday. January 30th and there will be the usual Solemn Mass at Hampstead at Noon, offered for the Conversion of Great Britain to Catholic Truth.
