A JULY DEVOTION IN HONOUR OF THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS

JESUS is not an idea, sentiment or memory! He is a Person, always alive and present with us! Present in the Holy Eucharist: present in a sacrificial way in Holy Mass which renews the Sacrifice of the Cross. Going to Holy Mass means going to the top of Calvary to meet Him, our Redeemer. He comes to us in Holy Communion, and is ever present in the Tabernacles of our Catholic churches. Jesus is our friend!

IN THY SWEET BODY AND MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD: LORD JESUS, WE ADORE THEE!

To contemplate Jesus involves being able to recognise Him wherever He manifests Himself, in His many forms of presence, but above all in the Living Sacrament of His Body and Blood. The Church draws her life from Christ in the Eucharist: by Him she is fed, and by Him she is enlightened. The Eucharist is both a mystery of faith and a mystery of light.

IN THY MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD: LORD JESUS, WE GIVE THEE OUR HEARTS AND SOULS!

The Eucharistic is light! In the Word of God constantly proclaimed, in the bread and wine that have become the Body and Blood of Christ, it is precisely He, the Risen Lord, Who opens minds and hearts, and indeed makes us recognise Him.

HAIL TO THEE, O MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF OUR REDEEMER: WHICH HAS SAVED US!

The Eucharist is a mode of being which passes from Jesus into each Christian, through whose testimony it is meant to spread throughout society and culture. The Christian who takes part in the Eucharist learns to become a promoter of communion and peace. More than ever, our troubled world demands that Christians learn to experience the Eucharist as a great school of peace: the peace of the Blood that was shed utterly for us in agony on the Cross.

DIVINE BLOOD OF THE LIVING SAVIOUR: HAVE MERCY, HAVE MERCY, HAVE MERCY!

In the humble signs of bread and wine, changed entirely into His Body and Blood, Jesus walks beside us as our strength and our Food for the journey, and He enables us to become witnesses of hope. If, in the presence of so great a mystery, reason experiences its limits, the heart, enlightened by the grace of the Holy Spirit, clearly sees the response that is demanded, and bows low in adoration and unbounded love.

ADORABLE BLOOD, O, PRECIOUS GIFT FROM THE LIVING GOD: WE ADORE THEE!

Let us pray: O, Lord, Who hast suffered us to approach Thy Holy Table, and with joy to draw water out of the wells of the Saviour: we beseech Thee, that His Blood may be to us a Well of water springing up unto life eternal. Through that same Blessed Christ, our Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

And a Passing Thought

A great faith merits great graces from the Lord. The more things your trust dares to ask of the Lord, the more you will receive. {Saint Bernard}

+++

Hail, Jesus, hail! Who for my sake, Sweet Blood from Mary's veins didst take,

And shed it all for me:

O blessed be my Saviour's Blood: My life. my light, my only good:

To all eternity!

O, to be sprinkled from the wells of Christ's own Sacred Blood excels

Earth's best and highest bliss!

The ministers of wrath divine hurt not the happy hearts that shine

With those red drops of His!

+++

LOUDER STILL, AND LOUDER: PRAISE THE PRECIOUS BLOOD!

+

Jesus comes to you in the Eucharist so that you will live forever. Holy Communion is not ordinary food: it is the Bread of Eternal Life, something more precious than gold or silver. This Food is the Body and Blood of Jesus! And Jesus promises that if we eat His Flesh and drink His Blood, we will have life in us, and we will live forever. Let us promise always to stay close to Jesus, for if we do so, we will be happy in this present world, and be with Him eternally in the world to come!
