JULY DEVOTIONS IN THE MONTH OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD

Bishop Anthony writes: The Jews said: ‘How can a man give us his flesh to eat and his blood to drink?' And this is a perfectly fair question because they didn't know that Jesus was more than a man – He is true God and true man, and with God nothing is impossible! The Jews themselves believed that offering blood sacrifices of animals to God was acceptable in His sight. They could not know that Christ was to offer Himself to the Father for the redemption of the whole world – in other words, shed His own Blood on the Cross in a much slower, more agonising way than that suffered by the quick killing of any animal! Some Jewish people would , in time, come to know what Jesus had done (the Apostles being obviously the first who would gradually come to comprehend) but the majority of them never have. He came to His own, and His own received Him not. By His death on the Cross, Jesus Christ repaired the rift that had existed between heaven and earth since the Fall: that first disobedience of human beings (our first parents). By His perfect obedience to the Will of the Father, and fulfilling what was, in fact, a Compact between Father and Son, Jesus ransomed from death the souls of all humankind – by His Precious Blood. He still loves us as His wayward children (and we are wayward, as we know!) and He still gives us His Precious Blood to drink in and through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. As it says in the Mass of the Sacred Heart: ‘The thoughts of His Heart are to all generations'. When a priest offers the Mass, he is showing the Father, reminding the Father, as it were, of what the son wrought for us in the shedding of His Precious Blood. The offering to the Father of the Body and Blood of Christ is the only Holy Act which keeps the wrath of God from a sinful world, because (as Archbishop Fulton Sheen said) ‘The Mass holds the Cross between heaven and earth, thus renewing that decisive moment when our sad and tragic humanity journeyed suddenly forth to the fullness of supernatural life'. Because of the Precious Blood of Jesus, our destiny is ultimately not separation from God, but eternal life with God.

Let us pray : Almighty, Everlasting God, Who didst appoint Thy only-begotten Son to be the Redeemer of the world, and didst will to be reconciled to us by His Blood: grant us, we beseech Thee, so to venerate with solemn worship, the price of our salvation, and by its power to be defended from the evils of this present life on earth, that we may rejoice in the everlasting fruits of that Precious. Blood, Amen.

And a Passing Thought

Desire to see God, be fearful of losing Him, and find joy in everything that can lead to Him.

If you act in this way, you will always live in great peace. {Saint Theresa of Avila}

CHRIST WE ARE SAVED BY THY BLOOD: GLORY JESUS, GLORY TO THEE!

FORTHWITH CAME THERE OUT BLOOD AND WATER: JESUS, REDEEMER, HAVE MERCY!

LOUDER STILL AND LOUDER: PRAISE THE PRECIOUS BLOOD!

This is He Who came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ: not by water only, but by water and blood. There are three Who bear record in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the spirit, and the water, and the blood, and these three agree in one.

{ First Epistle of Saint John, Chapter 5}

Let nothing disturb thee;

Let nothing dismay thee;

All things pass;

God never changes.

Patience attains

All that it strives for.

He who has God

Finds he lacks nothing.

God alone suffices.
